WHAT IS THE SA YOUNG WINE SHOW AND WHY YOU SHOULD ENTER
The SA Young Wine Show is a unique opportunity for the wine industry to annually present young wines for judging and use the results as a yardstick of quality.
The Show is also widely used by winemakers to enter new styles and cultivars for judging, while the well-known cultivars show their mettle as young wines.

2022 YOUNG WINES COMPETE FOR GENERAL SMUTS AND PIETMAN HUGO TROPHIES
The Young Wine Show once again presents the opportunity for all producers to compete for SA Champion Trophy status in 17 classes with their choice wines. Two particularly sought-after trophies are at stake, namely the General Smuts and Pietman Hugo Trophies, respectively as the competition’s top awards since 1952 for the overall champion wine and since 1994 for the recognition for the highest total points achieved for five wines entered.

2022 WINE VINTAGE CAN NOW ENTER FOR THE SA YOUNG WINE SHOW
The young wines of 2022 are being awaited with great expectations. Winemakers agree that wines of exemplary quality have been made this year, which yielded white and red wines with wonderful flavours despite the climatic conditions which varied considerably during both the growth and harvesting periods.
“A cool season and moderate climatic influences in most of the regions held back ripening, which gave vineyards the chance to develop pronounced flavour and colour in this year’s crop,” said Conrad Schutte, consultation service manager of the industry body, #VinproZA.

WINETECH VINE AND WINE INNOVATION WATCH: CAN VINE CUTTINGS BENEFIT THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?
With the global population increasing, it can only be expected that the demand for housing and fuel will increase. As pressure on natural resources are on the rise, we urgently need more sustainable alternatives to protect and preserve our environment for future generations. One such alternative has recently been investigated in the form of using vine cuttings as an additive in the manufacturing of pine core particle board.
LOOKING INTO WOOD ALTERNATIVES
Grapevines need to be pruned annually. Researchers from the Department of Engineering at Melbourne University in Australia figured that the wood from grapevine-pruning cuttings has the potential to be added as an alternative to woodchips in the manufacture of wood-based composites, such as pine core particle board.

SOUTH AFRICA TO HOST PRESTIGIOUS CONCOURS MONDIAL DU SAUVIGNON
For the first time in the 14-year history of the #ConcoursMondialduSauvignon, South Africa will host the competition, making it the first country outside Europe to host it.
This news was announced on Saturday 21 May 2022 in the Calabrian city of Cosenza in Italy, to an audience of 310 wine experts representing 45 nationalities, at the international @concoursmondialdebruxelles.
The 2023 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon will take place from Monday 13 March to Friday 17 March in Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands. The competition is hosted by the cultivar association @sauvignonblancsa in partnership with national, as well as international partners.
