📜 History of the show
In 1939, the tasting of the wines was limited for the first time to the producers, judges and members of the committee. A buffet meal was served and the wines of the exhibitors could be enjoyed with food. The reason for the restricted access was to ensure that the wine producers familiarise themselves with the requirements of export wines and in the process improve the quality of their own wines. As the wines were still too young at that time, it could create a wrong impression with the general public.

📜History of the show
In the Wine and Spirit Magazine of 25 November 1933, the purpose of the annual wine shows is nicely summed up by Mr. Goodchild-Brown. He sees this as an educational opportunity created by the Society (Genootskap) to help the winemakers to improve the quality of their wine through, among other things, closer links between producer, consumer and distributor. The show is therefore held in the interest of the wine industry and serves no sectional interests.

The tradition of a glamorous annual awards function, preceded by large-scale tasting of the top young wines, has been upheld over all these years followed by a gala dinner with some 350 guests in attendance – the tasting was, however, substantially scaled down last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and without a presentation function. The competition nevertheless received significant amount of entries in 2020.

The leaders in the wine industry hosted an annual show for the juice from the grapevine since 1903 in Paarl - the best products were awarded since the start of the show. When Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Society moved from Rosebank to Goodwood they were able to host the show in bigger, more modern buildings.
