The Search is on for the 2010 Champion Young Wines

It is time for the wine debutants of the 2010 harvest to present themselves to the judges of the SA Young Wine Awards. This prestigious competition has set the standard for young wine judging for the past 177 years and annually approximately 2 000 young, wines compete for attention and approval. Closing dates for entries are respectively 24 June at the various regional wine show associations and 12 July at the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA).

The competition’s most sought after General Smuts Trophy, awarded to the overall champion young wine, and the Pietman Hugo Trophy to the winery with the highest score for five different wines, are acknowledged by the South African wine industry as authoritative indications of quality.

Rawsonville wine cellar, Badsberg, last year made history by receiving both the General Smuts and Pietman Hugo trophies.  According to Badsberg’s cellar master, Willie Burger, the Young Wine Show provides wine makers with the best opportunity to compare their products with those of other cellars, especially in terms of experimental styles and new cultivars.  “We annually harvest about 23 000 tonnes of grapes and it is important for us to be able to compare young wines,” explains Burger. “The value of the competition lies also in the sharing of information and when a cellar wins a trophy it is a bonus that confirms that the wine maker is moving in the right direction with the cultivar and style.”

One of the major changes to this year’s competition is that participants can now enter more than one cultivar for the same category – a request from participants that was recently approved during a board meeting of the SANWSA.

Specialist panels consisting of prominent qualified wine judges will take the entries in the 17 categories through their paces at the Nederburg Auction complex from 26-30 July.  The victors will be announced on 19 August during a lunch held at the NH The Lord Charles Hotel and sponsored by Agri-Expo.

The SA Young Wine catalogue and entry form is available from or from the offices of the SA National Wine Show Association.
