Entries for the South African Young Wine Show, the oldest and one of the most popular wine competitions in the country, are now open for the finest selection of young wines from our winelands with entries closing on
June 25 at the regional wine show associations and on July 10 at the
SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA).
The SA Young Wine trophies’ main aim is to give recognition to remarkable wines in its first year of production. By doing this, acknowledgement is given to the skills of the winemaker and viticulturist, as well as the proficiency of the cellar.
Trophies will be awarded to 17 SA champions in the categories of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Other White Cultivar, Dry White Blend, Sweet White Wine, Noble Late Harvest, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Other Red Cultivar, Dry Red Blend, Port, Dessert Wine and Muscadel.
All eyes will once again be on the prestigious Great Champion wine with the sought after Genl Smuts Trophy as confirmation of the best of the best from young wine ranks. The five highest scores for different products from one cellar can look forward to receiving the esteemed Pietman Hugo Trophy.
Entries will be judged by a panel of specialist winemakers and experts with formal qualifications and specialist knowledge on specific wine styles. Judging of the 2014 young wines will take place from July 28 – August 1 in Paarl and the winners will be announced on August 22 at Sandringham, the home of AgriExpo.
